Tank Installation Guide

How to handle, install, fit and test a plastic sulfuric acid tank for safe, long service. Improper handling or installation can void your warranty.

Handling

  • Inspect the tank when it arrives, before you accept delivery. Note any damage on the bill of lading and packing list and call us right away.
  • Unload onto smooth ground free of rocks and sharp objects. Guard against forklift blades and use a crane to lift large tanks.
  • Never let the tank’s weight rest on a fitting, and never roll a tank over its fittings.

Installation

  • Set the tank on a smooth, firm surface that supports the whole bottom; a reinforced concrete pad is almost always best.
  • Secure tanks and stands against wind, seismic movement and motion of the contents. Tie-down systems are available.
  • Leave room for maintenance. Plastic tanks expand and contract with temperature and contents.
  • Protect the tank from impact, especially in cold weather.
  • Don’t mount equipment or heavy loads on the tank or its fittings.
  • Anyone entering a tank must guard against hazardous vapors and lack of oxygen.

Fittings & Accessories

  • Hand-tighten plastic bulkhead fittings; over-tightening causes leaks.
  • Fully support pipes and valves so fittings carry no weight.
  • Use flexible connections or expansion joints so the tank can expand and contract.
  • Keep heaters and accessories from touching the tank wall and follow their manufacturers’ instructions.

Sulfuric Acid Service

  • Confirm the tank resin, SG rating, fittings and gaskets suit your concentration. Check the ratings.
  • Tanks are rated for atmospheric pressure only; never pressurize a tank or pull a vacuum.
  • Sulfuric acid releases strong heat when mixed with water, according to PubChem. Make sure a water-tested tank is fully drained and dry before you fill it with acid.

Before Placing the Tank into Service

Fill the tank with water to test the installation and confirm every fitting is tight. Then drain it completely and let it dry before introducing acid.
