HDPE · cone bottom
Closed-top HDPE cone bottom tanks drain completely through the bottom outlet, so no acid is left behind when you empty the tank.

SG (specific gravity) is the heaviest liquid a tank is built to hold. Water is 1.0, so a 1.9 SG tank is made for liquids up to 1.9 times as heavy as water. Choose an SG rating at or above the specific gravity of your liquid.
Why this tank
Every tank on this page is rated 1.9 or 2.2 specific gravity. Concentrated sulfuric acid weighs about 1.84 times as much as water, so lighter-duty tanks are left off this list.
Concentrated acid is heavy, about 15 lb per gallon. We list only tanks rated 1.9 SG or 2.2 SG; choose 2.2 SG for extra wall thickness.
HDPE is rated Excellent for sulfuric acid up to 75% and Good from 75% to 93%. See the ratings.
The cone bottom empties fully through the outlet, ideal for batches and slurries.
HDPE tanks we mold use linear HDPE: Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7 or a comparable linear HDPE resin. In ExxonMobil testing in 97% acid, linear HDPE held its strength while crosslinked polyethylene turned brittle. See the study.
We install fittings and Viton® gaskets suited to your concentration. No welded flanges in the sidewall for sulfuric acid. See fittings.

FAQ
Choose a tank rated at or above the specific gravity of your acid. Concentrated sulfuric acid (96–98%) has a specific gravity of about 1.84, so a 1.9 SG tank is the minimum and 2.2 SG adds wall thickness and margin. Dilute acid weighs less, but we list only 1.9 and 2.2 SG tanks for sulfuric acid service.
HDPE is rated Excellent for sulfuric acid up to 75% and Good from 75% to 93%. For acid above 93%, contact us before ordering.
We strongly recommend it. The sealed outer wall captures a leak from the inner tank and keeps fumes from spilled acid contained, which a separate containment dike cannot do.
Viton® is rated Excellent at every concentration from 1% to 93%. EPDM is Excellent below 10% and Good above. Buna-N drops to Fair above 75%. We specify gaskets to match your concentration.
Dilute sulfuric acid attacks most metals and can release hydrogen gas, according to PubChem. HDPE, polypropylene and PVDF tanks are not attacked by the acid concentrations they are rated for.
Tanks used for sulfuric acid carry a limited one-year warranty from the date of manufacture, instead of our standard three-year tank warranty. Fittings we install carry a one-year warranty from installation. See warranty terms.
An ExxonMobil Chemical study found that crosslinked polyethylene became brittle within about 1,000 hours in 97% sulfuric acid, while linear HDPE kept most of its impact strength and elongation through 4,000 hours. HDPE tanks molded by Bailiff are linear HDPE, made from Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7 or a comparable linear HDPE resin. Read the summary.
